We’re back at Belmont on this fine Thursday! I decided to hit the late Pick 5 in this card today, let’s see if we can beat the chalk and find some value on the board here.
Race 5 (3:27pm): $35,000 Claiming, 8½ furlongs on the outer turf, 3 yr olds and up
#2 Tricky Magician gets the inside draw which should help him here thanks to his consistent speed. He gets Junior in the irons this time and at 12-1 this is one that provides great value in a race with no crazy standout. #5 Another is one of the better horses of the pack and has recorded considerable Beyers. She hasn’t won in a year and a half, but I like her here against weaker competition going a mile and a sixteenth. Impossible to not take the ML favorite #9 C C Rider, who has been incredible on the turf and has the best figures here.
Race 6 (3:59pm): Maiden Special Weight, 7 furlongs on the dirt, fillies & mares 3 yrs old and up
Not too much experience in this one, as most horses have only races one or two times, if that. That being said, the standout is the favorite #6 Back Channel, who was purchased for $400,000 back in 2018 and is trained by Linda Rice. She was beat in her debut by Primacy but ran very well. I expect her to break early for the lead and never look back, however, if you want value I’d look into #7 Simply Sweet, who is a first time starter under Bill Mott and gets Junior on the saddle.
Race 7 (4:32pm): Allowance Optional Claiming, 9 furlongs on the inner turf, 3 yr olds and up
#4 Shamrocket broke her maiden here at Belmont just a few weeks back on this turf course and is looking to keep the streak going. Although #2 Assiduously hasn’t recorded the highest speed figures, I like this Chad Brown horse with Irad on top with blinkers on – hopefully he gets going a little bit quicker out of the gate because he offers great value at 6-1. Lastly, you can’t leave out the favorite #5 No Word, who is the best in the field and dropping down in class here.
Race 8 (5:04pm): Allowance, 1 mile on the dirt, fillies & mares 3 yrs old and up
Biting on the two horses for the price of one option here with the #1 Cobra Sophie / #1A Excess Capacity, mainly for the 1A who gets Irad here and has early pace that rivals the favorite #5 Mrs. Danvers – who could likely destroy the field here.
Race 9 (5:36pm): $40,000 Maiden Claiming, 8½ furlongs on the outer turf, fillies & mares 3 yrs old and up
#2 Fleet Stepper made her debut here a couple weeks ago and posted a 59 Beyer, but she was bumped during that run. She gets second time lasix today and should run significantly better this time around. I like #5 Toastnjam who is 12-1 ML and offers some great value with Jose Ortiz on top. Sadly, the favorite #4 Come Storming looks strong enough to easily with this one, but he sits at 2-1 and with Javier on the saddle I don’t see that number getting any better for us.
LATE PICK 5 TICKET:
Total cost: $54 for a $.50 ticket.
Belmont has been super chalky recently, and this ticket backs that statement up. Hopefully we get lucky and get at least one solid non-favorite in there. Best of luck everyone, let’s have a Thursday!
